Whether you like your wines gently floral or fruity and zingy—

It’s easy to forget how zingy Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc can be. For wine of fruity purity, New Zealand rocks my world. But as Roger Moore quipped in The Spy Who Loved Me, ‘So does England’.

This week I’m delighted to recommend a home-grown bull’s-eye. A few miles south of Oxford, Brightwell makes one of the best whites in the country. Its 2018 Bacchus is sublime – gently floral, pleasingly piercing and utterly uplifting. Your best bet is to ring the winery direct.

Over the Channel, glorious Gascony delivers great value blends with similarly pristine appeal. Or for an iconic solo grape, Austrian Grüner Veltliner is ace. But it’s Santorini that steals my heart with its soaring local Assyrtiko – think Chablis turned up to 11. My wine of the week is a one-way ticket to the very peak of Mount Zing.
