These unsung steals of Sauvignon Blanc—

I once overheard a wine-maker spitting a mouthful of Sauvignon Blanc before bellowing ‘slut!’ at the top of his lungs. He may have been referring to the wine’s perfumed and tropical exuberance. But at its core, Sauvignon Blanc is a wine of grace and charm.

I love New Zealand’s achievement in bringing wine to a new legion of fans. The exotic flair of a wine from Marlborough is a delight. South Africa has also produced some notable splendour – I drink Iona Sauvignon Blanc 2018, which you can find for £12.03 from As for charm, I’ve managed to find a decent bottle from the Loire’s Pouilly-Fumé for just over a tenner this week – but buy the same grape from nearby Touraine for even keener prices. But the unsung steals of Sauvignon Blanc abound in Bordeaux. My wine of the week is sheer brilliance.
