Olly’s St Patrick’s Day dark beers—
Pints of Guinness traditionally flow on St Patrick’s Day, which lands this Wednesday. But dark beers don’t have to be heavy. Clever brewing delivers rich aromas of intensely roasted grains that create moody colour and deep flavours minus the ballast. Small Beer’s Dark Lager is a deft example and my pick of the week is just 0.5% alcohol yet still manages to feel like a treat – so you can embrace your saintly side.
OLLY’S PICK OF THE BUNCH
Small Beer Dark Lager (1%), £15 for six, theoriginalsmallbeer.com. Rich, dark aroma, yet light to sip, with terrific roasty resonance.
Harvey’s Prince of Denmark (7.5%), £32.52 for 12, shop.harveys.org.uk. Deep, sleek and powerful as a liquorice submarine.
Heaney Irish Stout (4.3%), £3.49, honestbrew.co.uk. Cocoa nibs, espresso and citrus zing – dark beer, divinely fresh.
Guinness Draught (4.1%), £4.25 for four, Asda. The velvet classic – immense with smoked or barbecued dishes.
BEER OF THE WEEK
Big Drop Alcohol-Free Galactic Milk Stout (0.5%), £1.50, Waitrose. This mellow magic brew is outstanding – try pairing it with a brownie!
