Ludicrously good value wines—

British Summer Time kicks off today and there are plenty of wines to cool and crack. Even better, I’ve found bunches of them that are ludicrously good value. In the battle between Aldi and Lidl, Aldi’s wines have often sneaked victory.

Lidl has made headway in choosing off-the-beaten-track gems – grape varieties you rarely see, such as the German grape Scheurebe. If you like Pinot Grigio, run to Lidl and buy buckets of its cool pure Junge Winzer Grauburgunder 2018 (13.5%) for £7.99 – it’s the same grape as Pinot Grigio.

But for consistency, The Wine Society is excellent and will return, and look out for Majestic’s new range too. On the high street, the Co-Op, Waitrose and M&S are all aglow with liquid treasures.

SUMMERTIME BOOZE: Castellore Italian Fiano 2018 (13%) £5.49 Aldi. Aldi have nailed this all-round stunner – perfect all summer long.

GOOD DAY SUNSHINE: Scheurebe Halbtrocken 2018 (11%) £6.99 Lidl. Fruity as peach in a honeysuckle garland! Fab with spicy food.

MR BLUE SKY: Côte de Charme Cabernet Franc 2018 (11.5%) £9 M&S. Chill this silky cherry red to sip in the sun while nibbling cheddar.

MR BLOOMTASTIC: Soalheiro Primeiras Vinhas Alvarinho  2018 (13%) £21 The Wine Society. Splash out on this rich zinger, I’ve bought a case. Next level wine.

Irresistible Pinot Noir 2017 (13.5%) £8 Co-op. Immense value for a sleek red that glimmers with finesse.
