Fragrant and peachy Italian whites…—

Recently, I was struck like a lemony cannonball by the excellent Garganega Pinot Grigio 2018 blend at M&S. At £7 (£6 until tomorrow), it defies the usual catcalls of Pinot Grigio, that it’s about as symphonic as a tuning fork. And beyond M&S, I’ve been finding many 2018 Italian whites massively on song – and with pitch-perfect prices.

Gavi (made from the Cortese grape) is often compared with fine French Chablis minus the price tag, while Fiano is richer and more peachy and works a charm paired with fish and shellfish. For fragrance, Zibibbo (aka Muscat of Alexandria) is as scented as orange blossom. But for an all-rounder, Lugana from south of Lake Garda is top. Made from Trebbiano di Lugana (the same grape as Verdicchio), my wine of the week from Waitrose hits the highest note.

CIAO BELLA: Sorso Fiano 2018 (13%) £6 Morrisons. A peach fused with a tangerine, rich and zingy.

THAT’S AMORE: Gavi di Gavi 2018 (12%) £6.99 Aldi. Super-stylish, this is a sublime citrus stunner.

MAMMA MIA: Vanita Grillo 2018 (12%) £7 Co-op. Brilliant! Lovely and lemony with a price that’s well worth it.

LA DOLCE VITA: Caruso & Minini Zibibbo 2018 (12.5%) £7.19* Majestic. Fragrant and floral as a stroll in an orange grove. This is bottled summer. *Mix Six Price

Zenato Villa Flora Lugana 2018 (13%) £11.99 Waitrose. The perfect all-round white for sipping all summer long.
