Torres Viña Esmeralda 2010 (Waitrose, £7.99) Fragrant, floral and gentle, this I a great, fun white, splendid as an aperitif or paired with mild aromatic recipes.

Batturica Tarragona D.O. 2005 Gran Reserva (Lidl, £4.99) Savoury more than fruity with aromas that remind me of earthiness, leather and dark coffee.
Single Estate Chardonnay Cava 2009 (M&S, £9.99) Lemony with a full flavour and plenty of delicate bubbles, this balances good quality with a fair price for a wine made in the same traditional method as Champagne.
Beronia Rioja Reserva 2006 (Waitrose, £12.99) Classic Rioja style with savoury hints of toast and leather along with plenty of black fruit flavour.
