Olly blends this year’s iconic Le Faîte for Plaimont—
Olly is honoured to be invited as guest blender for the 20th annual blending of the red and white Le Faîte, the flagship wine of Plaimont Producteurs, taking place at the historic Tour des Termes d’Armagnac in Gascony on 30th January 2017.
Since 1996, the cuvée of Le Faîte has been blended by big names in wine; in recent years for example Michel Bettane, Philippe Faure Brac, Andreas Larsson (Best Sommelier of the World 2007) and Laure Gasparotto.
The blending of Le Faîte in 2017 will see Serge Dubs and Olly Smith pick two cuvées out of five blends, one white and one red. The wine in question will become Le Faîte de Saint Mont blanc 2016, and Le Faîte de Saint Mont rouge 2015.
Serge Dubs is head sommelier at l’Auberge de l’Ill, Alsace, and was awarded Best Sommelier of the World in 1989. He was President of the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale from 2004 to 2010, and is today Vice President.
Olly Smith is a British wine expert, TV presenter, columnist and author. He is the wine journalist for the Mail on Sunday. He has also written three books on wine and gastronomy, and often appears on BBC1’s Saturday Kitchen. He is listed as one of Debrett’s 500 most influential people in the UK.
The wines are limited edition vinifications, with 20,000 bottles of Le Faîte red produced and just 10,000 of Le Faîte white. They are aimed at independents and the on-trade. After being bottled, the wines are sealed with wax and given wooden tags; an old tradition of the winemakers of Gascony who stored their wine underground in clay. A single wooden tag would remain intact in these conditions.
